LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is making final preparations for a city-wide rollout of its curbside organics collection program.

The city says in a news release that “green bins” will be distributed to homes across the city that already have curbside garbage and recycling pickup sometime in April 2023.

By mid-April to early May, the municipality says approximately 32,000 households will have received their new waste bins.

The first date for organics collection is set for sometime in mid-May. Residents will be charged $5 for the program for the first time on their May 2023 utility bill.

A spokesperson with the City of Lethbridge told Lethbridge News Now that the exact dates for when bin distribution and pickup will start have yet to be determined.

In the lead up to the beginning of curbside organics collection, the City of Lethbridge has launched a new mini series on YouTube, titled, “Curbside Enthusiasm.” Eight episodes will be released, showcasing different aspects of the program.

The first episode is available now on the City of Lethbridge YouTube channel.

The city-wide expansion of the green bin initiative follows a pilot project that began in April 2022.

Approximately 1,900 homes in the Varsity Village, Legacy Ridge, and Hardieville neighbourhoods were equipped with green bins and had the opportunity to provide feedback.

In a survey released in January 2023, approximately 78.1 per cent of respondents said they were happy with the program, and cited the environmental benefits of organics collection, freeing up more space in their garbage bins, and the convenience it provided as a few of its positive aspects.

Multi-family homes will become part of the curbside organics collection program at a later, yet-to-be-determined date.
