LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College has shown off a new way it plans to commemorate its most skilled current and former students.

The post-secondary school unveiled the Honour Wall of Skills Competitions on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

The wall is on the first and second floors of the main hallway of the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility and displays banners from past skills competitions.

Dean of the Lethbridge College Centre for Trades Sheldon Anderson said in a news release that their students, both past and present, have made their school proud at these events.

“Banners presented to medal winners used to be displayed in the student’s own work areas, so they were scattered in our various shops and labs,” said Anderson. “We want all students and visitors to the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility to see just how successful our students and apprentices have been. They are highly skilled and it shows.”

Anderson adds that his hope in establishing the Honour Wall is to inspire high school students who are exploring careers in the trades.

Last year, Lethbridge College students Joshua Mandin (plumbing) and Danny Peeters (heavy vehicle technology) won gold at the provincial skills competitions. Mandin went on to win gold at the Skills Canada National Competition and competed internationally in Germany.

Mandin said the opportunity to compete in skills competitions was life changing and he encouraged high school and post-secondary students to partake.

“It was an experience I’ll never be able to replace,” said Mandin. “It shaped me into who I am today, as a plumber, and as an individual. Throughout each different competition, the stress and the skill required to complete the tasks has helped train me so that in the future of my career I’ll be more ready for what’s to come.”

An unveiling ceremony for the Honour Wall also marked the launch of the South West Regional Skills competition for high school students.

It was the first in-person competition for South West Regional Skills since 2019 and featured 63 students competing in 10 categories, including auto service technology, cabinet making, welding photography, video production, and hairstyling.

The winners from the regional event will have the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada Alberta provincial competition. It takes place May 3 and 4, 2023, in Edmonton.

The list of winners from the South West Regional Skills Competition is available on the Career Steps website.
