LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge hosts the Hockey Alberta Female U13B Provincial Championship this week.

The Lethbridge Cyclones Under-13 team is welcoming five different teams from five different leagues to compete at Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre for the tournament, which is on from Thursday, March 23 to Sunday, March 26, 2023.

Each team will play three round-robin games, with one each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Manager of the Lethbridge Cyclones U13B team Natascha Jung expressed her gratitude from volunteers and several businesses who helped to organize the event.

Jung said, “The Lethbridge Cyclones parent organization put in a bid to host the provincials for our age group here and we were lucky enough to be successful in that bid. So, all of the parents of our team have been putting together the raffle, and all the on ice-things with the help of many businesses in the city, and of course the blood, sweat and tears of parent volunteers.”

A raffle takes place during the tournament in the Lethbridge Sport Council meeting room, which is adjacent to the hockey arena.

Items up for grabs range from signed NHL jerseys, local goodie baskets and gift cards. Proceeds will go towards supporting the development of girls’ hockey in Lethbridge.

Jung explained, “Some of the funds raised will go to cover the costs of the tournament obviously, [and] other funds raised will go back to the Lethbridge Cyclones Development Fund, which is the female division of Lethbridge Minor Hockey.”

The Lethbridge Sport Council will also be conducting a study of the economic impact that a tournament of this size has on the city, as it is expected to bring in hundreds of people from across Alberta.

As part of the championship tournament, a provincial banquet dinner will take place on Saturday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Coast Hotel. Tickets for the tournament are available at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre.

In Alberta, U13 is open to players who are born in 2010 and subsequent years.
