UPDATE: More injuries reported in school bus collision near Coalhurst, man charged

COALHURST, AB – The RCMP said one man is facing charges following a collision between a pickup truck and a school bus.

At approximately 8:50 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2023, officers say they were called to the intersection of Township Road 10-2 and Range Road 232, northwest of Coalhurst.

Initially, the RCMP said only the driver of the pickup truck was hurt and had been hospitalized with serious injuries.

In an updated news release, officials report that the bus driver also sustained serious injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. As well, a child on the bus suffered a concussion.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

The RCMP adds that a total of 18 children were on the bus at the time of the collision.

A 25-year-old man from Coalhurst is charged with one count of failing to obey a yield sign under the Traffic Safety Act. He remains in hospital with serious injuries.

The RCMP said no further updates on this matter are anticipated.
