Southern Alberta wrestlers win medals at national event

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A group of wrestlers from Southern Alberta fared well against the very best in the country.

Nine athletes from the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA) and two from the Medicine Hat Hawks attended the 2023 Canadian U15/U17/U19 Wrestling Championships in Vancouver, B.C., from March 24-26, 2023.

LAWA Program Coordinator and Pronghorn Head Coach Shawn Daye-Finley said it was a top-notch competition with the best of the best representing their weight classes, and is proud of how well the local group did.

“I’m so proud of our athletes and their progression in the sport,” said Daye-Finley. “Ironically, over half of those athletes are still in Grade 11 and have another shot at this age group Nationals next year. I am looking forward to seeing their performance continue to evolve.”

Three competitors with LAWA hit the podium while one from the Hawks did the same. The full list of local wrestlers at the event is shown below:

The LAWA has been active for 35 years in the community. The University of Lethbridge Pronghorn wrestling team will begin its inaugural season in 2023.
