Lethbridge speed skaters win medals at western Canadian championships

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A group of speed skaters from Lethbridge proved that they are among the fastest in the country.

Members of the Lethbridge Speed Skating Association competed at the Western Canadian Youth Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Saskatoon, SK, on March 25 and 26, 2023.

Each athlete competed in 11 races, including the 1500-meter qualifier and final; 400-meter heat, semi-final, and final; 800-meter heat, semi-final, and final; 1000-meter super-final; and two relays.

In the youth 13 male category, Gavin Ogilvie earned 40,000 points, the maximum amount possible, to capture the title as the top performer at the event. He set a personal best in the 400-metre event of 38.7 seconds and the 800 metre event of 1:18.1, earning a gold medal in both events. Ogilvie also captured gold in the 1,000 and 1,500 metre events.

In the youth 12 female category, Zosia Adelman earned 17,183 points to reach fourth place. She earned a bronze medal in the 1,500 metre event with a personal best time of 2:55:4. Adelman came in fourth in the 800 metre final and won the 1,000 metre super-final.

Also in the youth 12 female category, Zoe Wesseling totalled 9,448 points to finish eighth overall. She achieved a personal best in the 400 metre event of 44.9 seconds and won the 1,000 metre super-final.

In the youth 11 female category, Claire Peake earned 6,635 points to capture 11th place. She completed a four-peat of Lethbridge skaters and won the respective 1,000 metre super-final races with a personal best time of 1:57:3. Peake finished fourth in the 400 metre event and set personal bests in the 800 metre and 1,500 metre events.

With the conclusion of this event, the Lethbridge speed skaters have wrapped up their season.
