TEIJI NAKAMURA passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2023 with his family by his side.
He is survived by his children: Gary (Sylvia) Nakamura, Susan (Darin) Sirovyak and Sachi Joy (Craig) Scharf, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his sister Amy (Norman, deceased) Nakamura.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ayako, his most cherished friend, Kay Maruno, and his brother, Susumu.
Teiji was born in Vancouver, BC in 1924. As a Japanese Canadian, he and his family were interned to Picture Butte, AB in 1941. He became a mechanic by trade, apprenticing at Beny Chevrolet. He left Beny’s to become co-owner of John and Wimp Shell station of Lethbridge. After the station closed, he worked for the City of Lethbridge Parks and Recreation Department until he retired in 1989.
Teiji was a long-standing member of the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, (BTSA) and served several years on the Chojukai Board of Directors. His involvement with the Chojukai led to many cherished casino trips to Edmonton and Moosejaw. He is remembered fondly for his love for fishing, watching baseball, getting together with the “Over-the-Hill-Gang”, and going to the Casino.
We would like to thank Dr. Z. Majiet and Beatriz Caruci for their caring and compassionate care, Black Rock Terrace where he resided for the past several years (and said it was the best place he ever lived), and St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit.
A Memorial Service will be held at THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, 470 – 40 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Friends may meet the family from 10:00 – 10:45 AM.
The family gratefully declines Koden and flowers. Those who wish, may offer a remembrance to the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, 470-40 Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 3Z5 or St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit Lethbridge.
