Lethbridge College receives grant to bring newcomers into trades

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College has received a grant aimed at bringing newcomers into the trades.

The college was awarded a $300,000 Settlement, Integration and Language Projects (SILP) grant, courtesy of Alberta’s Ministry of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism.

According to a media release from the college, the SILP grant is aimed at “funding supports projects that work toward strengthening a diverse and inclusive workforce by helping communities attract, welcome and retain newcomers.”

The 15-week program will focus on building professional, technical, communication and occupation-specific skills needed to enter and succeed in the labour market.

Kevin Smith, Dean of the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences, said, “Thanks to SILP, we can utilize our world-class facilities for trades and apprenticeship training and English language teaching to offer a program that will give newcomers the skills they need to be successful, while helping to address labour shortages in multiple industries.”

The $300,000 grant will provide program funding over two years, up to a total of 72 people.

The grant will introduce four new programs to the school: Introduction to Trades, a course covering industry-specific English terminology and language, Employment Skills and Employment Readiness.

Lethbridge College is the first post-secondary institution in Southern Alberta to be awarded a SILP grant.
