TABER, AB – The owners of electric vehicles (EV) will soon have more places to charge them in Taber.

The Town of Taber announced on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, that it has received a grant of $103,560 from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program.

The money will allow the municipality to install a total of 17 EV stations at the town’s administration building, arena, fire hall, police station, public works shop, water treatment plant, and wastewater treatment plant.

The Town of Taber said in a news release, “What’s even cooler? Our future ice resurfacer will be electric powered, thanks to a grant through the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities grant program. More details to come in the future.”

Purchasing and installation of the stations are fully covered by the grant. They will be available to the public and can be utilized for what the town said is a “small fee.”

Town of Taber Facilities and Energy Manager Blake Hranac said the opportunity to bring more EV charging stations to the community is something he and the town are grateful for.

“As our municipal fleet begins to include more electric vehicles, we are glad we can be proactive in upgrading our infrastructure to include EV Charging Stations to accommodate them,” said Hranac. “Now, visitors to our community have even more options to charge their vehicles and makes Taber a great place to stop on their travels across beautiful Southern Alberta.”

The Government of Alberta announced last year that all of Highway 3, from the B.C.-Alberta border to the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, will be twinned. This will start with a 46 kilometre section between Taber and Burdett.

As the highway twinning project gets underway, the town said it will be important to ensure it can accommodate all types of vehicles who will be coming through the community.

Timelines for when the installation of the EV charging stations will take place was not provided.
