Province reporting multiple active wildfires across Alberta

ALBERTA – The provincial government has provided an update on current wildfire conditions.

According to the Government of Alberta, there are 72 active wildfires across the province as of Thursday night, May 4, 2023. 44 wildfire starts were reported Thursday.

Officials note the fires have resulted in the evacuation of roughly 3,726 individuals. There have been four State of Local Emergencies declared and one Band Council Resolution, including in:

  • Lac St. Anne County
  • Beaver Lake Cree Nation
  • Rainbow Lake
  • Brazeau County
  • The Little Red River Cree Nation has declared a Band Council Resolution

The province said there are three wildfires burning in the area of Fox Lake, which are threatening the nearby community. As of 6:00 p.m. on May 4, 20 households, the police station and the Northern Store in Fox Lake have been destroyed. A reception centre has been opened at the Fox Lake Band Office.

Officials also noted numerous highways and roads in the areas impacted have been closed due to smoke. Updates on road conditions are available through 511 Alberta.
