LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College graduates will be celebrated on Friday, May 26 during the 2023 Spring Convocation. Two ceremonies will take place in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

Roughly 800 students are receiving degrees, diplomas, or certificates from the college this month. About 500 of those students are anticipated to cross the stage on Friday. Officials noted that these students include more than 120 international learners from a dozen different countries, as well as students who took courses online.

The morning ceremony will include a formal recognition of Dave Jackson as the honorary degree recipient. Jackson is the 22nd person to receive this honour. He and his wife are the owners of Lealta Building Supplies. Throughout his career, Jackson has supported local organizations including Youth One, which offers mentorship based after-school programs and support services for youth.

In a news release, Stephanie Savage, Lethbridge College’s Manager of Engagement said, “Dave consistently models and inspires integrity, humility, kindness and leadership, and he is a worthy recipient of this honour.”

Meanwhile, the afternoon ceremony will showcase the accomplishments of Spring 2023 valedictorian Michael Kindley. The General Arts and Science program student earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Kindley concurrently attended classes at the University of Lethbridge, where is plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience.

In a news release, Kindley said he is honoured to be named valedictorian. He stated, “Any number of students would be excellent representatives of this grad class. Athletics and academics through this institution have given so much – be it instructors, coaches, athletic directors and staff – and I am happy to have returned on the faith that was placed in me.”

Not only did Kindley find success in the classroom, but he achieved recognition on the volleyball court. He served as the captain for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s volleyball team from 2021 and 2023, helping guide the team to two Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference silver medals and a fourth-place finish at the 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships.

The Spring Convocation ceremony will be livestreamed via the Lethbridge College website. The morning ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., with the afternoon event at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 26 in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College.
