Town of Taber employee wins provincial award

TABER, AB – A Town of Taber staff member has won a provincial award.

Lisa DeBona is the Waste Services and Administrative Manager in the Public Works Department.

She is the winner of the Alberta Public Works Association’s (APWA) 2022 Administrative Professional of the Year (Urban) Award. The prize recognizes outstanding achievement in administration within the public works department, while serving to “inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector”.

DeBona started working at the Town of Taber in 2013 as a Clerk Typist 1.

In 2017, she joined the management team as the Public Works Administrative Supervisor before being named to her current position. Her responsibilities have encompassed the overall administration of the Public Works Department, fleet management, waste collection, project management, and work order tracking, among other areas.

DeBona said, “Receiving this award is a tremendous honour. I am grateful for the support of my dedicated team and mentors over the years. This recognition motivates me to continues striving for excellence in serving our community.”

The Town of Taber noted that DeBona led a transformation of Taber’s Waste Management System, which resulted in the three-cart system and an increase in recycling and compost diversion rates. That project earned the Town of Taber three different awards.

Director of Planning, Engineering, and Operations, Chris Eagan said, “Her [DeBona] contributions to our team are immeasurable, and we are honored to have her as a valued member who demonstrates unwavering commitment to her coworkers and the public she serves.”

Meanwhile, Taber mayor Andrew Prokop said on behalf of council, “We applaud Lisa DeBona for receiving this prestigious award. Her unwavering commitment, professionalism, and dedication to our Public Works Department have made a lasting impact on our community and serve as an inspiring example for others in the field.”

Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Taber, Derrin Thibault said, “Her [DeBona] award is a testament to her continuous dedication in elevating her profession and showcasing the exemplary qualities of all public works professionals on her own team, in Alberta, and beyond.”

Thibault added, “We consider ourselves fortunate to have Lisa as part of Team Taber, and we extend our warm congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.”

DeBona was presented with her award earlier in June at the APWA’s Annual Conference.
