LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge woman has entered a guilty plea in connection to alleged abuse against an infant.

In Lethbridge Provincial Court on Friday, June 16, 2023, the 31-year-old woman pleaded guilty to one count of failing to provide the necessaries of life.

A court-imposed publication ban prevents anyone from releasing any information that could identify the victim, which includes the identities of those facing charges in this case.

On January 18, 2023, the Lethbridge Police Service said it was called to a home on the north side to check the welfare of a six-week-old girl. Police claim to have received information to suggest that the child was being abused.

The baby was taken to hospital in Lethbridge, then transferred to another medical facility in Calgary. The young girl was discharged in April but remains under continued medical care.

The woman is scheduled to be sentenced on August 18, 2023. A pre-sentence report will be prepared in advance of this date.

A 51-year-old man is also charged in connection to the alleged abuse. He faces one count each of aggravated assault, sexual assault, sexual interference, and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The man’s matter was adjourned to Friday, June 23, 2023.
