Roughly 3,000 tonnes of debris collected during 2023 Street Sweeping program in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The 2023 Street Sweeping program in Lethbridge has been deemed a success.

The annual initiative is now complete, with crews having brushed 788 kilometres of residential roadways. The City of Lethbridge said in the process, about 3,000 tonnes of debris was collected.

Every spring, street sweeping vehicles are used to clean sand, dirt and other debris from roads in Lethbridge. The 2023 program took about 11 weeks to finish all residential streets in the city. Crew members collected almost double the amount of debris that was picked up in 2022.

The City of Lethbridge is thanking residents for cooperating with the program, and note that street sweepers can clean roadways and neighborhoods most efficiently and thoroughly when all vehicles have been moved from parking lanes.

Julian Ruck, Transportation Operations Manager said, “Residents did a great job of signing up for schedule reminders and watching for parking signs in their neighborhoods.”

Ruck added, “The sweeping schedule can change rapidly due to events like rain and high winds, so having an informed community directly impacted how efficiently we were able to complete the routes this year.”

Officials said that street sweeping helps to reduce dust and improves conditions for cycling, walking and driving. It also helps prevent more materials from washing into the Oldman River through the storm sewer system.

Sand and debris collected as part of the program is stored and cleaned for reuse. The reconditioned sand is mixed into future sanding operations and other residual waste material is disposed of in the landfill.
