COLEMAN, AB – A historic venue in Coleman is set for rejuvenation thanks to community support.

At the Fitful of Dollars event in Coleman on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, Teck Resources Limited announced a $250,000 funding boost towards the restoration of the Roxy Theatre.

The event was hosted by Crowsnest Cando and the Revive the Roxy Fundraising Committee.

The Quonset-style theatre was originally built in 1948 and last operated in 2013. The Revive the Roxy Project aims to revitalize the 275-seat venue so it can reopen to the public and help facilitate the growth of the arts scene in the area.

Once the restoration is complete, the Roxy Theatre will host live performances, show movies and provide a space for cultural events to help the local economy and community.

Robin Sheremeta, senior vice president of coal at Teck said, “Teck is committed to making a positive difference in the communities where we operate and knows the value of the performing arts like the Roxy Theatre in building lively communities where we live, work and play.”

Sheremeta added, “The revitalization of the Roxy Theatre will expand cultural experiences and amenities for residents and visitors to Coleman and Crowsnest Pass, home to nearly 500 Teck employees.”

The theatre revitalization efforts are being led by the Crowsnest Cando – Crowsnest Cultural & Recreation Society Committee.

Crowsnest Cando president Tim Juhlin said, “The Roxy Theatre will support a growing regional arts scene as a venue for our growing arts community and to help cultivate an arts hub along Highway 3 to attract artists to the area.”

“Teck’s donation makes significant progress towards our fundraising goals. Once reopened, the Roxy Theatre will be a dynamic cultural hub and provide a much needed performing space for our growing arts community in Crowsnest and the Elk Valley.”

Officials said as fundraising efforts continue, work on the exterior of the Roxy Theatre is anticipated to start in August 2023.
