Taber Police Service expands Community Standards Unit to Barnwell

BARNWELL, AB – Taber Police Service (TPS) has announced that its Regional Community Standards Unit (CSU) has expanded.

TPS announced on Friday, August 18, 2023 that the Village of Barnwell has officially joined the CSU partnership.

The CSU was first adopted by TPS in October 2022, and consists of one Community Standards Officer. In the spring and summer months, it expands to include two full-time seasonal Bylaw Officers.

According to the Town of Taber, the unit is focused on patrolling the community, and responding to calls for service for reported violations of community standards and bylaw infractions.

Merrill Harris, reeve with the Municipal District of Taber said, “For nearly a year, the collaborative efforts between the Town of Taber, the Taber Police Service, and the Municipal District of Taber have resulted in a regional approach to bylaw enforcement through the Community Standards Unit Program.”

He added, “Today, we are pleased to see another neighbouring municipality, being the Village of Barnwell, participate in a similar partnership.”

The CSU will work in compliment to RCMP in Barnwell, and will focus on enforcing bylaws and provincial legislation, with a focus on proactive patrols in the village.

Taber Mayor Andrew Prokop expressed his excitement for the partnership, saying, “This is the very first Collaborative Effort of a Regional Community Standards Unit in the Province of Alberta. We are very proud and thrilled to be part of this milestone related initiative, and very much look forward to great successes ahead for all parties involved.”

The Community Standards Officer ran the first patrol of Barnwell on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
