Fire Restriction back in effect for Lethbridge County

Aug 25, 2023 | 2:05 PM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – Lethbridge County has re-instituted a fire restriction.

The restriction will come into effect at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023. The risk of fire spread is elevated again due to hot, dry conditions that are forecast for this weekend and into next week.

Under the fire restriction, all active fire and fireworks permits are cancelled, and no new ones will be issued until further notice. Fines will apply for burning unauthorized items during the restriction.

Fire Services Manager Byron Fraser said, “While the precipitation received earlier this week provided some relief for a few days, hot and windy conditions have elevated the fire risk to a point where reinstating the Fire Restriction is necessary.”

Fires contained in cooking or heating appliances fueled by fluids or gasses, as well as recreational campfires are still permitted, as long as the campfire fits the specifications of the County’s Fire Bylaw.

The County is reminding residents that, if they have a fire, to always make sure the fire is completely out and never leave it unattended. Farmers are asked to always have a water truck available, as the risk of fires in the fields has increased.

Lethbridge County previously lifted the fire restriction on Tuesday, August 22 following periods of moisture and cooler temperatures in the preceding days.

Fire status can be found on the County website.
