Travellers advised to plan ahead to ensure smooth long weekend travel

Aug 31, 2023 | 3:19 PM

OTTAWA, ON – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reminding Labour Day long weekend travellers to be prepared before they hit the road.

The agency said the weekend can be extra busy as Canada welcomes many international students, returning residents and travellers enjoying the last official long weekend of the summer.

In 2022, CBSA facilitated the arrival of over 60 million travellers while keeping over 1,100 firearms and 24,400 prohibited weapons off the streets. The agency also seized over 41,000 kg of illegal drugs.

The agency has issued some tips for travellers ahead of the long weekend. These include:

  • Visit the border wait times online page. Travellers crossing the border by land are encouraged to cross during non-peak hours, such as the early morning. CBSA said the Monday of long weekends tends to be the busiest day with longer wait times.
  • Those arriving at the Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg, Halifax, Quebec City, Ottawa, Billy Bishop, Calgary, and Edmonton airports can make their customs and immigration declaration to CBSA prior to their arrival using Advance Declaration. Those that use this option can access express lanes to get to an airport kiosk or eGate faster.
  • When travelling with children, it is recommended that the accompanying adult has a consent letter authorizing them to travel with the child if they share custody or are not the parent of legal guardian.
  • Travellers should be prepared to declare their goods upon entry into Canada. Returning residents should have their receipts readily available for goods purchased or received while outside of Canada.
  • Boaters planning to travel in or near Canadian waters or enter Canada by boat should review reporting requirements for private boaters before making travel plans. All travellers entering Canada by boat must report to the CBSA without delay.

A full border reminder checklist is available at the Government of Canada website.
