EDMONTON, AB – Alberta’s government has announced funding to support innovative research at Alberta’s post-secondary institutions.

The province’s $27.3 million investment comes from the Major Innovation Fund. The funding will focus on projects in the areas of medical devices, electronic and mobile health, clean energy, and space and defence technologies.

The Universities of Alberta and Calgary will partner with other schools, such as the University of Lethbridge and Athabasca University to collaborate on the projects.

Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation, said, “Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have delivered world-class research in many fields including artificial intelligence, health care, energy, agriculture, and so much more.”

Glubish added, “I am excited for this investment of $27.3 million to build upon that strong foundation of research, innovation and technology commercialization.”

The University of Lethbridge is involved in multiple funded projects.

David Naylor and Locke Spencer, professors in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, will be involved in migrating the technologies developed by the Astronomical Instrumentation Group (AIG) at the U of L, a project led by the University of Calgary (U of C).

Dr. Saurya Das, a professor in the physics and astronomy department at the U of L, is one of nine principal investigators in a U of C project centred on quantum technology innovations.

A full list of projects is at the U of L website.
