LETHBRIDGE, AB – Ground was officially broken at the new Garry Station school project on Friday, September 22, 2023.

The new K-5 elementary school in west Lethbridge will eventually be able to accommodate 900 students, and will feature a 6,000 square metre structure.

Thanks to funding from the City of Lethbridge, the school will feature a large gymnasium, which will be utilized for hosting tournaments, as well as community use outside of school hours.

The development will be the Lethbridge School Division’s (LSD) first two-storey elementary school built since the 1950s, when Senator Buchanan Elementary and Westminster Elementary School were constructed.

Christine Lee, associate superintendent of business and operations for the LSD, explained that the stairs are multi-functional, “My favourite part of the design is that it has a grand staircase that goes up to the second storey that goes to the Learning Commons and so, students can come down and they could read on the staircase, we could have performances on the staircase, lots of collaborative opportunities.”

Lee added, “A new school always attracts additional housing because the community grows around the school and the school will grow with the community.”

The new school in Garry Station is expected to alleviate some pressure from the Mike Mountain Horse Elementary School, which is currently the only primary school in that area of west Lethbridge and overcapacity. The goal is for the new school to be operational by September 2025.
