LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes started off their season on the right foot with a 3-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday, September 22, 2023.

The Hurricanes went down 1-0 late in the first period with a goal by Broncos winger Maddix McCagherty. However, from there, the Hurricanes defense and goaltender Harrison Meneghin shut the door.

Lethbridge stormed back in the third period with goals 12 seconds apart by defenceman Logan McCutcheon and forward Landen Ward. Ward’s goal was the first of his Western Hockey League (WHL) career.

The Hurricanes fell into some penalty trouble in the third period as well, with a five minute major and game misconduct for Ward, along with a four minute double minor for Miguel Marques.

Despite that, the Hurricanes killed off over four minutes of five-on-three penalty time. Logan Wormald scored the insurance goal later in the period to clinch the 3-1 victory.

Meneghin was named the first star of the game after stopping 40 of 41 shots. Hurricanes defender Kale Tipler was the second star after putting up two assists, and Broncos goaltender Joey Rocha was the third star.

The game also represented Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters’ first WHL win since winning the 2008 Memorial Cup with the Spokane Chiefs.

The Hurricanes will look to continue their momentum when they take on the Broncos again in Swift Current on Saturday, September 23. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
