UPDATE – September 30, 2023 at 5:40 p.m.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has determined that activity reported to be suspicious at a north side park on September 27, 2023, was not criminal in nature.

The LPS has confirmed that a male, who had been suspected of photographing children at the park along Mildred Dobbs Boulevard North, is a newcomer to Canada. The investigation determined that he had been face-timing his family to show them the park, and not photographing children.

Police have also confirmed that a similar situation on September 24, where a man was reported after he appeared to be photographing children at a park along the 1300 block of Lakemount Boulevard South, is unrelated. The investigation into that matter is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY – SEPTEMBER 28, 2023 at 2:46 p.m.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has issued a public warning following two separate reported incidents.

The LPS said that on September 24, 2023, officers responded to a report of a suspicious male who appeared to be taking photos of children at a playground along the 1300 block of Lakemount Boulevard South. According to police, the complainant stated that the male was acting “weird” and had his phone angled in a way to record the children playing.

On September 27, the LPS received a similar report of a male taking photos of children in a school playground along Mildred Dobbs Boulevard North. In this alleged incident, police said the individual was seen pretending to take photos of himself, but would then tip his phone to photograph the children. The LPS reported that when a child called out to their peers that the person was taking photos of them, he fled the area on foot.

According to police, in both instances, the person has been described as a darker-skinned male in his 20s, possibly of East African descent.

The LPS noted that while it is not a criminal offence to take photos in a public place, the male’s conduct in two city playgrounds has been deemed suspicious and his intentions are unknown.

Anyone who spots suspicious activity is asked to contact police immediately at 403-328-4444.
