LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College has unveiled new Indigenous jerseys for all of its Kodiaks Athletics teams.

The school unveiled the jerseys as part of Reconciliation Week on Friday, September 29, 2023. Each team has different variations of the jerseys, designed to fit the sport being played.

The jerseys feature the Aikowania Bear logo, designed by artist Monte Eagle Plume using traditional Blackfoot painting methods.

Also on the jersey is a pattern resembling a Pendelton Blanket designed by Multimedia Production student Raven Tailfeathers, a Sspomitapiiski (Star People) design on the arms, and a mountain design on the back.

Samantha Burgis, goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team, is Indigenous, and said of the jerseys, “I think it’s really amazing to see my culture being represented with these jerseys. I think they’re beautiful, I think they represent so much, and I can’t wait to wear them tomorrow.”

The Indigenous jerseys will be worn on special occasions. The first time the Kodiaks will be wearing the new set of jerseys is Saturday, September 30 on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The cross-country and soccer teams will be wearing them during their events.

Kodiaks Athletics Director Todd Caughlin said even though the jerseys are just slated to be used on certain occasions, that could change.

He explained, “Athletes are very superstitious, so you know what, if they get a couple of big wins in them, I’m gonna guess I’m going to get some requests to wear them more often, and I am not going to turn that down.”

The college recently won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Innovation award for its “We are Aikowania” video and facility reconciliation initiative.

The Kodiaks revealed a new Indigenous logo, gym floor, and name Aikowania last year.
