EDMONTON, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes won the first of their two game road trip in Edmonton on Friday, September 29, 2023, with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Oil Kings.

Nathan Pilling scored first for the Oil Kings, giving them a 1-0 lead at the 7:28 mark of the first period. Five minutes later, Landen Ward deflected Noah Chadwick’s point shot to tie the game 1-1.

The Hurricanes took their first lead of the night with just over three minutes left in the first period. Tyson Zimmer earned his second goal of the season with a deflection on the powerplay. Tristen Doyle and Logan Wormald picked up assists on the goal.

Lethbridge began the second period with a man-advantage, but allowed Lethbridge native John Szabo to score a short handed goal and tie the game. The Oil Kings reclaimed the lead a few minutes later, as Pilling scored his second of the game, and gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead.

Carter Dereniwsky evened the score at 3-3 with his first goal as a Hurricane. Zimmer picked up another point, with an assist on the goal.

In the third period, and overtime, the Hurricanes were able to hold off the Oil Kings on three separate power plays thanks to Harrison Meneghin, and the game needed a shootout to decide a winner.

Both Zimmer and Wormald scored on their attempts before Meneghin closed the door on Pilling, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 shootout win.

The ‘Canes were outshot 35-34 in the game, scoring on just one of their five powerplay attempts. Their penalty kill was strong, allowing one goal on seven Oil Kings power plays.

The Hurricanes are now 3-0-0-0 on the season, the first time since the 2008-2009 season that they have won their first three games.

The ‘Canes will finish their trip in Edmonton on Sunday, October 1, then they will return to the ENMAX Centre on October 6 to face the Moose Jaw Warriors.
