Hurricanes cap off weekend slate with 5-2 win over Oil Kings

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes finished off their three-game weekend with a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Monday, October 9, 2023.

The Oil Kings started off the game’s scoring with Rylan Kovacevic’s fourth of the season in the first period. The rest of the period had no more goals, but the Hurricanes penalty kill shined, killing off four penalties.

In the second period, Koope Gizowski scored his first goal as a Hurricane, assisted by Tristan Doyle and Miguel Marques on the power play.

The Oil Kings retook their lead later in the period, but it was short-lived, with Carter Dereniwsky netting his second of the season just 25 seconds later.

At the 15:07 mark of the second, Marques added a powerplay goal of his own, assisted by Landen Ward and Logan Wormald. 51 seconds later, Dereniwsky struck again on the pwerplay for his second of the game from Blake Swetlikoff and Tyson Zimmer.

Lethbridge killed off three more penalties in the third period, while captain Joe Arntsen buried the empty netter to solidify his team’s 5-2 victory.

Harrison Meneghin was once again a bright spot in net for Lethbridge, leading the Hurricanes to victory despite his team being outshot. Meneghin stopped 38 of 40 shots in the game to mark his fifth win of the season.

The Hurricanes will return to Lethbridge for their next game against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday, October 11. Puck drop will be at 7:00 p.m.
