Nikka Yuko Bright Lights welcome in the New Year
LETHBRIDGE – The Nikka Yuko Bright Lights Festival is proving popular, in spite of cold temperatures and evenings of high wind chill. The lure of the beautiful display of more than 96,000 LED lights, across the garden’s four acres, had drawn in almost 4000 visitors by Friday (Dec 30th). A particularly special event is planned for New Year’s Eve, as Izumi sensei will conduct the 13th annual bell-ringing or Joya-no-Kane ceremony to welcome in the New Year at 11:30. The gardens open at 7:00-pm.
Many cultures around the world have a ‘season of light’ celebration during the winter months as a means of dispelling the darker days, and the Japanese culture is no exception. The Nikka Yuko gardens incorporated that observance into a Winter Lights Festival and created the new attraction to draw-in visitors.
Nikka Yuko Executive Director, Michelle Day, said a large number of people have commented that they would like to see lights in the garden.
“So, when we did our research on the cultural significance of winter lights in Japan and what that meant, we thought it would be perfect to have a unique winter light display with the cultural explanation of why the Japanese lights in the winter time.”
