Multi-agency training scenario held at Lethbridge Courthouse

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A training scenario was held at the Lethbridge Courthouse on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

The scenario was a mock protest held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The protest involved multiple agencies, including the City of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Police Service (LPS), and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES).

The event also had journalism students from Lethbridge College, as well as actors from the drama programs at the University of Lethbridge in attendance.

Sgt. Denton Michelson with the LPS Critical Incident Team said, “We know that when incidents happen we have to work as a team to solve the issues, we always want to train that so when the real call comes in we are able to respond.”

Planning for the mock protest scenario has been in the works for over one year, and the agencies continued on despite the cold weather and snowfall.

Luke Palmer, Emergency Planning and Risk Supervisor with the City of Lethbridge said, “We make sure our plans are robust enough and account for everything we have here in the city. We make sure our response plans are valid and that our crews are getting the rigor behind it.”

Palmer added that the scenarios also work to identify areas of improvement for the departments, which will be touched on in future scenarios.

He said, “We find out exactly where we have our gaps, and we make sure that we’re rectifying those going forward just to make sure we’re maintaining public safety.”

The training scenario was the second one put on this year by LPS, following one in the spring.
