Western Hockey League announces new safety measure
CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League (WHL) has announced the adoption of mandatory neck guards for all players, effective Friday, November 3, 2023, or as soon as the equipment is available for the teams.
All players are obliged to wear protective neck guards at all times while on the ice, including during games and practices.
This measure is in response to the tragic passing of Adam Johnson. The American hockey player passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023 following an incident during a game. Johnson was playing with the Nottingham Panthers in England when he collided with a player on the Sheffield Steelers during the second period of their match-up. Johnson was only 29-years-old.
