CALGARY, AB – Local speed skaters were successful at two recent competitions.

The Canadian Short Track Speed Skating Junior Championships were held in Calgary between Thursday, November 9, 2023 and Sunday, November 12. The junior skaters, aged 16 to 18, participated in two 1,500-metre heats and two 1,500-metre finals.

Additionally, they competed in two rounds of three races at the 500-metre and 1,000-metre distances. Medals were awarded for each of the finals throughout the event.

Zakhary Adelman and Mikka Eaves, both of Lethbridge, competed in the Junior Nationals.

Adelman earned a position in the B Final in five out of six events and finished first in the B Final for the first 500-metre final. He ranked 32nd out of 40 skaters, seventh among B2 skaters aged 16, and was the third fastest skater from Alberta.

Eaves, meanwhile, made it to the A Final in three events and finished fourth in the one 1,000-metre event, while earning a silver in the other 1,000-metre race. She finished in the top six in all but one racing series and finished fifth overall among the 40 skaters at the championship event. Eaves’ performance put her in contention to earn a spot on the Canadian National Junior Team.

NEO-JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Neo-Junior Short Track Speed Skating National Championships were held in Calgary from Friday, November 10 to Sunday, November 12. The event for the top 60 14 and 15-year-olds in the country featured two 1,500-metre races, three 500-metre races and three 1,000-metre races.

Gavin Ogilvie represented Lethbridge at the event. Following a slow start, Ogilvie improved as the competition went on. He finished 19th in the 1,500-metre event, 12th in the 500-metre event and sixth in the 1,000 metre event. Ogilvie ranked 14th overall and fourth among C2 skaters aged 14-years-old.

The three local athletes will not get a break for the holidays, using that time to train for competitions coming in the new year.
