LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge residents will get a chance to share their thoughts about a provincial pension plan in January.

The Alberta NDP has announced a new set of in-person town halls across the province in early 2024.

In September, the governing UCP released findings from a new report regarding Alberta’s potential exit from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) in favour of a provincial plan.

The report from LifeWorks suggested that transitioning to a new Alberta Pension Plan could save Albertans billions of dollars.

The NDP will host an in-person town hall in Lethbridge on January 30, 2024.

Sarah Hoffman, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition said, “It is alarming to see how determined they are to gamble with Albertans’ pensions, ignoring widespread opposition and expert advice.

“The Alberta NDP is committed to making sure that doesn’t happen. We will continue to ensure the people of this province have a real opportunity to have their voices heard.”

Other town halls are scheduled in the following communities:

  • Calgary – January 23, 2024
  • Edmonton – January 30, 2024
  • Medicine Hat – January 31, 2024
  • High River – February 1, 2024
  • Drumheller – February 9, 2024
  • South Calgary – February 11, 2024
  • Calgary (Beddington) – February 24, 2024

Alberta NDP Critic for Finance, Pensions and Insurance, and Lethbridge-West MLA Shannon Phillips said, “Albertans have overwhelmingly expressed their concerns regarding the UCP’s reckless approach to handling our pensions.”

She continued, “In 2023, we heard from tens of thousands of Albertans, and their message was unequivocal – the UCP must not gamble with the CPP. We’re continuing our direct consultations with the public to further amplify their voices.”

Phillips added, “The CPP is more than just a retirement plan; it promises security for Albertans’ future. We’re here to safeguard that promise.”
