Lethbridge College polls staff on their favourite holiday movies

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A long-running debate around the holiday season surrounds the question of what the greatest holiday film is.

At Lethbridge College, there has been a yearly tradition called the Holiday Movie Poll, which gives employees a chance to vote for their favourite holiday flick.

Since 2018 when the tradition began, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation has been undefeated in securing the top spot. In addition to that, Elf and Home Alone have been consistent presences in the top five.

The 2023 top rankings are:

  1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
  2. Home Alone (1990)
  3. Elf (2003)
  4. Die Hard (1988)
  5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

Karl Rejman, who teaches the humanities in the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences, spoke on the common themes of holiday movies.

He said, “If we compare Die Hard to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, both of those shows are about family. The main character in Die Hard is trying to put his family back together. It’s with helicopters and machine guns and this heroic ’80s motif, but that becomes the vehicle for us to think about our own friends and families.”

Melanie Fast, a communications specialist who has overseen the poll for the last two years, says more than 200 employees voted in the latest poll.
