UPDATE: One killed in collision near Coalhurst

COALHURST, AB – UPDATE (9:05 a.m. Dec 28): The RCMP has confirmed one fatality in a collision in southern Alberta.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, officers were called to a collision on Highway 3 near Highway 509, just west of Coalhurst.

According to the RCMP’s preliminary investigation, a semi truck travelling eastbound was slowing down to make a left-hand turn when it was rear-ended by an SUV.

A 78-year-old man from Magrath, the driver and lone occupant of the SUV, was pronounced deceased on scene. Officials will not be releasing the name of the victim.

The driver of the semi truck was not injured.

The RCMP remained on scene for several hours and is continuing to investigate.

The highway has since fully reopened to traffic.
