City of Lethbridge opens “comfort shelters” due to extreme cold

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is taking steps to ensure people who do not have access to adequate shelter can stay warm.

In response to the extreme cold warning from Environment Canada, the municipality has activated its Extreme Weather Response Protocols.

That means the following facilities will operate as “comfort shelters” to provide a safe haven from the winter weather:

  • Lethbridge Public Library Main branch
    • Monday-Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
    • Sunday: 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Lethbridge Public Library Crossings Branch
    • Monday-Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
    • Thursday-Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
    • Sunday: 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Regional Park n’ Ride Transit terminal
    • Monday-Friday: 5:45 a.m. – midnight
    • Saturday: 7 a.m. – midnight
    • Sunday: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Helen Schuler Nature Centre
    • Tuesday-Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
    • Sunday: 1 – 5 p.m.

The extreme cold warning states that wind chill values on Thursday, January 11, 2024, could get as low as -40 degrees Celsius, further decreasing to -50 on Saturday morning.
