LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE (12:20 p.m.) Environment Canada has ended the extreme cold warning.

Original Story:

It is not supposed to last long this time, but the bone-chilling cold weather has returned.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for most of Alberta on Friday, January 19, 2024.

They say temperatures are expected to moderate Friday afternoon in most areas, but wind chill values overnight could dip as low as -40 degrees Celsius.

Communities in the southwestern region are not included in the extreme cold warning, such as Cardston, Crowsnest Pass, Waterton Lakes National Park, and Canmore.

The weather forecaster said extreme cold puts everyone at risk, but particularly young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

The public is asked to dress warmly and to limit their time outdoors as much as possible.

“Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes,” reads an advisory from Environment Canada.

For the following several days starting on Saturday, temperatures are forecast to be in the single-digit plusses and minuses.

More information on weather alerts can be found on the Environment Canada website.
