Lethbridge City Council developing Water Conservation plan to address drought conditions

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge City Council has passed a resolution to continue addressing water supply concerns.

Lethbridge, along with many other municipalities in Alberta, has been hampered by drought conditions, leading to low levels in the Oldman Reservoir.

Acting Mayor John Middleton-Hope brought the Official Business Motion (OBM) to council for the January 23, 2024 meeting. The OBM directs the City Manager to undertake four measures involving water conservation:

• Continue collaborative efforts with the province and regional partners on proactive measures to address water supply concerns;
• Examine best practices to determine constructive approaches most likely to yield success for Lethbridge and the surrounding districts;
• Explore programs to incentivize water conservation for consideration at the April 11, 2024 Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee; and
• Provide monthly updates to the Assets & Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee, beginning February 1, 2024, on the status of drought and water-supply conditions and the progress of the Water Conservation initiatives.

Middleton-Hope reaffirmed council’s commitment to overcoming the challenges presented by the dry conditions. He elaborated, “These proactive measures are essential to ensuring a sustainable and resilient water supply for the community and our regional partners, both now and into the future.”

In addition, the City is also developing a Water Conservation Plan (WCP), aimed at initiating changes to long-term water consumption in the area. The City has released a Water Conservation Plan Survey for residents, businesses and organizations to complete.

The survey will allow those who complete it to provide feedback on current water conservation practices and possible initiatives.

The feedback will be used to form the WCP, which will be presented to the Assets and Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee on April 4.
