RED DEER, AB – Speed skaters from Lethbridge were successful at a recent showdown.

On January 20 and 21, 2024, youth-aged members of the Lethbridge Speed Skating Association competed in a national qualifying event at Setters Place Oval in Red Deer. Over the two-day competition, the skaters participated in two Olympic-style 500-metre events, and three mass star events, including a 300-metre, 1,500-metre and seven-lap contest.

Zosia Adelman finished third in the 1,500 and seven-lap events, which led to a fourth-place overall finish. Claire Peake finished third in the Youth Female 12 category and 10th overall among female skaters. Ryker Olsen, meanwhile, had a strong showing, finishing seventh in the Youth Male 13 category and eighth overall among male skaters.

All three athletes positioned themselves to qualify for Team Alberta and skate at the Canadian Youth Long Track Speed Skating Championships in Quebec City next month.

Two other skaters also represented Lethbridge in Red Deer. Wyatt Scratch competed in the Ability Five Division. Scratch won every race and finished with a gold medal. Gavin Ogilvie competed in the Junior/Senior category. He finished first in the 1,500-metre race and earned a bronze at the event.

The next long track speed skating competition for Lethbridge athletes will be the national championships. The youth-aged skaters (11-13) will be participating in Quebec City on February 10 and 11. The neo-junior-aged skaters (14-15) will be in Fort St. John on February 3 and 4.
