QUEBEC CITY, QC – Two speed skaters from Lethbridge recently competed on the national stage.

Claire Peake participated in the Canadian Youth Long Track Speed Skating Championships in Quebec City on February 10 and 11, 2024. Peake was part of the Youth Female 12 category and competed in a 300-metre mass start heat and final, an Olympic-style 500-metre race, a 1,500-metre mass start race, seven-lap mass start race, and team pursuit.

Peake finished 17th in the 500-metre race, securing a time of 51.6 seconds. She also finished 17th in the 300-metre, 13th in the 1,500-metre, and 10th in the seven-lap race.

The local athlete won a bronze medal in the team pursuit while skating with a team of two other Alberta skaters and one from British Columbia.

GAVIN OGILVIE

Gavin Ogilvie represented Lethbridge as well earlier this month, at the Neo Junior Long Track National Championships in Fort St. John, British Columbia on February 3 and 4.

Participating as a Neo Junior 14 skater against athletes one year older, Ogilvie competed in four Olympic-style events: a 500-metre, 1,000-metre, 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre. He also took part in a 10-lap mass start race and a team pursuit race.

Ogilvie recorded a personal best in the 3,000-metre race, lowering his best time by eight seconds to a national-leading time in the distance for his age of 4:27.88. Ogilvie finished in fifth and sixth in all events except for the 1,500-metre. In that race, he placed fourth.

UP NEXT

The completion of the national championships means the long track season has ended for skaters. Athletes will now spend the rest of the season participating in short track competitions.

The next major event is the Alberta Winter Games, to be hosted in Grande Prairie this weekend. The southern region will be represented in speed skating by Peake and Ogilvie, as well as Lethbridge’s Ryker Olsen and Zosia Adelman.
