Coaldale prepares for potential drought conditions

Feb 16, 2024 | 11:20 AM

COALDALE, AB – Coaldale town council discussed drought conditions in its latest Committee of the Whole (COTW) meeting on February 5, 2024.

A letter received from the Alberta government in late 2023 outlined the measures that the province is taking in order to conserve water. However, in the letter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz said that “municipal action” will also be needed.

Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn explained that Coaldale is reliant on the City of Lethbridge for its water supply.

Van Rijn said, “In the spirit of provincial and regional cooperation we thought it would be a good idea to get ahead of this now and signal our support for the City’s forthcoming water conservation plan.”

He continued, “At the same time, we see this as an opportunity to start discussing what, if anything, the Town of Coaldale can or should do to supplement those measures.”

Van Rijn added, “When we use less water, we stand to expand our growth horizon, and so if there are ways to make sure we’re using water more efficiently as a community, we want to consider those as well.”
