Magrath man killed in avalanche near Castle Mountain

CASTLE MOUNTAIN, AB – An avalanche in southeastern Alberta has resulted in the death of one person.

Crowsnest Pass RCMP said it, along with officers from Pincher Creek, were called to an avalanche around 5:52 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

It occurred between Castle Mountain Ski Resort and Carbondale Hill, which is north of the resort.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., RCMP said two adults and two children were snowmobiling in the backcountry when a snow slide occurred.

One man and both children were able to escape but the second man was buried in the snow.

The following afternoon, a search operation was conducted by Pincher Creek RCMP, the Southwestern Alberta Regional Search Rescue, Fernie Search and Rescue, Alberta Conservation, and K9 and handler.

Crew members were able to locate and retrieve the body, who has since been identified as a 46-year-old man from Magrath. He has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The name of the deceased will not be released.
