Lethbridge East MLA upbeat about year to come

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge East MLA Maria Fitzpatrick believes that her local riding is well-positioned for a successful new year.

Fitzpatrick sat down with Lethbridge News Now and highlighted some 2016 community investments over 2016. Despite not being situated in her riding, Fitzpatrick considers the Destination Project as the highlight of the year.

“There are lots of students who will attend that facility in the future and anything that connects both the university and the college improves and brings people into our city,” she said.

The recent investment by Cavendish Farms is another area that the local MLA sees as a catalyst of change for Lethbridge’s current economic standings.

“There has been a lot of controversy over the carbon levy and yet Cavendish Farms still believes that Lethbridge is a good place to invest,” Fitzpatrick said. “This is the largest investment ever in the city and will equate to jobs over construction and operation.”

Another key factor to a prosperous city can be checked off the list for Fitzpatrick. She added the Green Trip announcement, which saw the government fund some new more environmentally-friendly buses, will assist in the elevation of current transportation options.

Other indicators of a successful year for the local MLA falls on the ability to address public concerns.

“Our office has good contacts with the ministries. We had a person come into our office and talk about the railway tracks going across Highway 3 and 30th Street. We contacted Transportation and Infrastructure about it, and within a week that pavement was being fixed,” Fitzpatrick said.

While her riding would like to put more money into health care and disability in the future, Fitzpatrick stressed her contentment with new provincial negotiations that will help to stay on budget while maintaining services.

“Minister Hoffman and a negotiating team worked with the Alberta Medical Association to hammer out a new contract for doctors. That deal cut the costs of physician fees and charges.”

Fitzpatrick closed by stating that she will approach 2017 with a “glass-half-full” mantra and continue to address public concern and invest in infrastructure and job creation.
