Theatre Outré hosts Quaint, Quirky & Queer Festival

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Theatre Outré is celebrating a big anniversary.

For over a decade, the local troupe has presented award-winning shows that have brought queer voices to the forefront of the theatre community in Lethbridge and beyond.

For two weeks, from March 20 to 31, 2024, Theatre Outré will partner with area organizations to present different events in downtown Lethbridge as part of the Quaint, Quirky & Queer Festival, marking its 11th anniversary.

“For my first festival as the new artistic director, I want our festival to be a celebration as we look forward to what is next, not just for our company but for the community – a community filled with tenacity, uniqueness and beauty,” says artistic director Brett Dahl.

“Our festival is here to uplift our queer friends and allies who choose to call southern Alberta home.”

The 2024 festival focuses on the pillars of the company: theatre, drag, improv and music.

At the heart of the event, guided by Dahl and the troupe’s new general manager Brent Clark, is the annual cabaret.

“The festival has been curated to highlight and celebrate what we do best at Theatre Outré! As we look towards our next decade, I want the festival to be a launching pad for new queer work here in Alberta,” adds Dahl.

“As southern Alberta’s queer theatre, we have a responsibility to invest in the voices of our community. Currently, Alberta, unlike other provinces, does not have a place devoted to developing new queer work. So I want to ensure that it is at the heart of our festival.”

Festival events include:

  • March 20: Live music night at the Owl Acoustic Lounge featuring Clover Overboard, fawns and Crown the Jester.
  • March 28: Quaint, Quirky & Qu-omedy stand-up and improv comedy at Good Times Lethbridge Comedy Club, featuring the Impromptou Players and special guest Conner Christmas.
  • March 30: Quaint, Quirky & Queer Cabaret at the Galt Museum.
    • The event will feature a variety of acts from local performers, including theatre, burlesque, music, drag, dance and more.
  • March 31: Queeriosity: An Afternoon of New Queer Work!
    • This event will feature previews of new work by queer writers at the Galt Museum.

Full event details are at the Theatre Outré website.
