LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta is supporting new research initiatives in order to strengthen public safety in municipalities.

Aside from fighting fires, municipal firefighters are often the first to respond to medical emergencies and other disasters, and also educate the public about fire safety and prevention. To help with the work needed, the government is funding $700,000 to municipalities and the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association for research and training.

Ric McIver, Minister of Municipal Affairs says that strengthening public safety is paramount for the government.

“Public safety is always a priority, and our government recognizes that strong partnerships are key to keeping Albertans Safe,” says McIver. “We are pleased to work together with the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association to improve firefighting services for all Albertans. We remain committed to ensuring Alberta municipalities have access to excellent firefighting resources and information.”

Officials say that it’s crucial that local fire services are adequately equipped to respond safely and effectively to emergencies. In order to ensure this, the government reportedly provides annual grants totalling $500,000 to fire service training.

The province is putting $200,000 toward research to make sure that firefighters have all the information they need to respond quickly, safely, and efficiently no matter the circumstance. The research will also help find how municipalities can mitigate risks.

Randy Schroeder, president of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, says he is happy with the funding.

“We are encouraged by the Alberta Government’s commitment to supporting the AFCA’s Fire Services Data project, which involves researching a fire services data mechanism to enable data-driven decision-making,” says Schroeder

He continued, “The $200,000 grant to enhance fire data reporting is a testament to the power of collaboration between the government and fire services.”
