LPS offering enhanced online reporting for less-serious crimes

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents of Lethbridge now have new and expanded ways to report minor crimes online.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says its online reporting system has remained relatively unaltered since being introduced in 2011.

Following a series of reviews, some changes have been made for less-serious incidents that are considered non-emergency and do not require the attendance of police.

They include the addition of a new traffic complaint category, which gives people two options to report situations that are considered non-emergent, meaning there is no imminent or ongoing danger to the public.

In cases where you have a person’s license plate and you are willing to provide a statement and serve as a witness in court, you must attend the police station in person. However, if you are satisfied with a warning letter from police to the registered owner, you can complete an online report.

The LPS has also increased the parameters for theft and mischief reports from a maximum of $5,000 to $10,000.

The service accepts online reports for the following incidents:

• Lost property (not including Canadian passports, license plates, firearms or weapons)
• Damage/mischief to property under $10,000
• Damage/mischief to vehicle under $10,000
• Theft under $10,000 (not including Canadian passports, license plates, firearms or weapons)
• Theft from vehicle under $10,000
• Information only reports (to document nuisance or non-criminal incidents)
• Traffic complaints (non-emergent incidents involving dangerous or aggressive driving)

By making these changes, the LPS hopes to free up more police officer resources to handle more serious and complex matters.
