Phase one of MPE LINK Pathway complete

COALDALE, AB – Phase one of the MPE LINK Pathway construction has been completed.

Phase one of the walking and cycling trail includes a 3.5 kilometre section from the St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) drainage canal across from 30 Street in Coaldale to an area just before Highway 512, with a turnaround section before the highway.

Excavation on Phase One began on May 27, 2024, and paving finished on June 3.

The finished section was presented at a grand opening and barbecue on Thursday, August 8, 2024. The event featured speeches from members of local governments, the LINK Pathway Committee, and others, and also had a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Henry Doeve, president of the LINK Pathway Committee spoke on how they hope the pathway will connect the nearby areas.

Doeve says that the pathway is around 35 percent complete. With the completion of Phase one, the committee is looking to raise funds to begin the second phase of the project. Phase two includes working on the Highway 512 tunnel at the end of the first phase area.
