Several hospitalized following collision near Coalhurst

COALHURST, AB – UPDATE (Aug. 23 @ 2:20 p.m.) The RCMP has confirmed that a 13-year-old girl from Calgary has died following a collision northwest of Coalhurst from earlier this week.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision.

The RCMP is continuing to investigate a major motor vehicle collision in southern Alberta.

At approximately 12:05 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, officers were called to a two vehicle head-on collision northwest of Coalhurst on Highway 3 at the interchange of Highway 3A.

One vehicle was fully engulfed in flames with front-end damage. A second vehicle, a 2024 Nissan Sentra, had substantial front-end damage.

The driver of the Nissan, a man from Lethbridge, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His seven-year-old was transported to a hospital in Calgary with critical injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a woman from Calgary, sustained non-life-threatening injures and was taken to a local hospital. The passengers in the vehicle, all children from the same family aged 16, 13, and nine, are in life-threatening condition in a Calgary hospital.

The cause of the collision has not been determined and there is no word yet on whether any charges will be laid.
