LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) collaborated on a new pilot program, which they are deeming a success.

The Off the Record program saw the two organizations team up to host recreational events in public parks throughout the community, allowing youths in Lethbridge to have a mentorship opportunity with off-duty officers through sport.

The pilot project, which was created through the Building Safer Communities grant-funded program, ran throughout July and August and saw more than 60 youth and 20 off-duty officers participating in soccer, basketball and football in City parks.

Constable Brooklyn Peterson said, “Off The Record has been a great opportunity to connect with the youth in our community in a fun way and create new relationships outside the uniform. It’s a great reminder for participants that police officers are just people too. We like to have fun and want to help make a difference for them and our community.”

According to the City, they aimed to help promote physical activity and teamwork, and nurture trust and mutual respect between law enforcement and the community. They add that feedback from the participants hs been very positive, with many happy to engage with the officers in a different way.

LPS and the Building Safer Communities team have more events in the coming months, looking to expand the program into the future.
