A man from southern Alberta is dead following an altercation with the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

The CPS says it was called to the Carriage House Hotel on Macleod Trail just after midnight on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, on reports of a disturbance.

The attending officers allege that a man in the front lobby was “acting erratically” and refusing to leave.

“Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation; however, the man was not cooperative. A struggle ensued, resulting in one officer deploying a Taser,” reads a statement from CPS. “The man continued to be combative with officers, resulting in one officer deploying OC spray.”

The man was taken into custody, and shortly after, went into medical distress. He was declared deceased at the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has confirmed it is investigating the matter and will release more details at a later date.

The victim has been identified as Jonathan Lee Wells, 42, of the Blood Tribe.

His obituary on Legacy Funeral Home describes Wells as a “one of a kind cowboy” with a “heart of gold and a contagious smile.”

He competed in rodeo events across Canada and the U.S., and was the 2012 INRF Steer Wrestling Tour Champion.
