Performing Arts Centre Project in Lethbridge hosts open house

Sep 24, 2024 | 12:03 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB The Performing Arts Centre Project is an initiative started by the Lethbridge Performing Arts Centre Advocacy Group surrounding the conversation of a new performing arts centre in Lethbridge.

An open house is being held to inform the public on the progress and the general reasons for this project.

It will be from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the Community Room at Casa. The address is 230 8 St S.

Conversation about a new performing arts centre has been around for a while. Dawn Leite, a member of the citizen-based group says this is a project that has been in the works since the year 2000.

Leite says, “The project itself has been identified as early as 2000 through the City of Lethbridge Needs Assessment and continues to be identified as a high priority for this community to have a secondary or third facility in within our community to offer space for performing arts organizations. as we are growing, our city, we are lacking a number of audience amenities in our current venue, we are also lacking in seating count.”

She explains that the Yates Memorial Centre Theatre and the University of Lethbridge’s Theatre can’t accommodate the performer’s needs, as well as the audience’s seating needs.

Although the VisitLethbridge.com Arena can convert a part of the arena for theatre-style productions, Leite says, “For a performing arts centre to have the seating count of between 950-1250, is a lack in our community.”
