Lethbridge artists & supporters honoured

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A series of local artists and supporters of the arts have been given awards.

The Mayor’s Luncheon for Business and the Arts was held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

The event celebrated the relationship between the arts, local businesses and municipal government.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says it is important to recognize the work of artists and associated organizations.

”Arts, in its many forms, has the power to transcend boundaries, connect hearts, and inspire change,” says Hyggen.

The following awards were handed out at the luncheon:

  • Joan Waterfield Memorial Award:
    Recipient: Kathy Matkin-Clapton
    This award, sponsored by Brent Olesky (Royal LePage), celebrates an individual recognized by their peers for advancing and enhancing the arts in Lethbridge.
  • AACE (Allied Arts Council Excellence) Awards:
    Honoring those who have significantly contributed to the local arts community.
    • Individual: Teri Petz
    • Business: Analog Books
    • Service Organization: BIPOC Foundation
  • Aspiring Artist Award:
    Recipient: Kennedy Chinn
    Awarded to a promising young artist (Grades 9–12) in the Lethbridge region, this prize includes $1,000 to encourage their artistic development.
  • Young Artist Award:
    Recipients: Kade Carter & Russell Milder
    Recognizing emerging artists in the region, this award includes a $1,000 prize to support their ongoing creative growth.

Allied Arts Council Executive Director Jana MacKenzie says she is grateful for the ongoing support from businesses, the city, and those who make the event possible every year.

“This luncheon is a reminder of the collaborative spirit that fuels the arts, and we look forward to building an even brighter future together,” says MacKenzie.
