LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new face will be making his Lethbridge Hurricanes debut on Friday, October 11, 2024.

Shane Smith, who the Hurricanes acquired on Saturday, October 5 from the Medicine Hat Tigers, will join the team for their matchup against the Vancouver Giants. The Hurricanes sent goaltender Harrison Meneghin to the Tigers in return.

Last year in Medicine Hat, Smith scored 29 goals and added 22 assists for 51 points in 64 games. His 29 tallies put him third on the team in goal scoring, and he added two points in five games during the playoffs.

Smith says the trade really surprised him at first, especially since he was going to the other side of the Highway 3 rivalry. He said despite the shock, he is excited to get playing for a Hurricanes team off to a hot start.

In Smith, the Hurricanes get a 19-year-old winger with a scoring touch and positional versatility, who has spent time on both the powerplay and penalty kill.

General Manager Peter Anholt says that despite how tough it was for him to trade away Meneghin, he believes Smith’s skillset and versatility will fit seamlessly into the Hurricanes’ roster.

The Hurricanes come into the game currently sporting a 4-1-0-0 record, good for second place in the Central Division behind the Red Deer Rebels.

Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
